Instructions

Prepare the Black Bean Mixture

  • In a large mixing bowl, mash the drained and rinsed black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth.
  • Add diced red bell pepper, finely chopped onion, and minced garlic to the mashed beans. Mix well.

Incorporate Ingredients

  • Beat the egg lightly in a separate bowl and add it to the bean mixture.
  • Stir in the bread crumbs, ground cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

Form and Cook the Patties

  • Shape the mixture into 2 equal-sized patties.
  • Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  • Once hot, cook the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and firm.

Assemble the Burgers

  • Toast the hamburger buns lightly.
  • Place a cooked patty on the bottom half of each bun.
  • Top each patty with a slice of cheddar cheese, lettuce leaf, tomato slice, and a dollop of mayonnaise.
  • Finish with the top bun.

Tips

  • Ensure the black beans are exceptionally well drained to prevent a soggy mixture.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the mixture.
  • For extra crispy patties, consider baking them under a broiler for 2-3 minutes per side after pan-frying.
  • Substitute the cheddar with Swiss cheese or a slice of avocado for variety.
  • Pair with a side of sweet potato fries or a light salad for a complete meal.
